I Love Mammoth!

Mammoth Lakes is nestled high in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range and is a four and a half hour drive from North Los Angeles. The drive up U.S. 395 is beautiful. The closer I get to Mammoth, the less stress and more at peace I begin to feel. The 8500-foot elevation, the pine trees, the blue sky and fresh air all create a sense of relaxation. But it doesn't simply end there. I go to Mammoth for more than mere relaxation. I go to live life to the fullest. To snowboard during the winter; to mountain bike, hike, and fish during the summer. On this particular trip, it was the middle of fall. This time of year is unique as it is too cold to do a lot of outdoor activity and too warm for snow. Known as the in-between season, it’s usually pretty slow. But I love it regardless.

It was a Saturday night when I arrived in town and I went to Lakanuki, my favorite watering hole, to have a few drinks with the locals. If you have never been to a ski town and had drinks with the locals, you need to experience this. (Or not, depending on your style.) It is very much like a college party. What you have is a bunch of twenty-somethings who love to ski or snowboard, and have moved to a ski resort to enjoy life. Most of them work at the ski resort or find jobs – usually night jobs or part-time jobs – that allow them plenty of ride time. Working at the resort is preferred, as a season pass is part of the compensation.

During the winter ski season, there are always several people from Australia, New Zealand, Brazil or some other faraway place that is currently undergoing the opposite season. When the cold season ends in New Zealand, a lot of skiers and snowboarders will migrate to North American ski resorts in search of a never-ending winter. So during an evening out at a major ski-town, one could easily meet people from all over the world. The greatest common denominator for all of them is the fact that they love life and they live it outside.

On the Saturday night that I arrived, I found myself at a nightclub drinking with friends. That’s when I bumped into Scottie Marzonie. He asked me how tall I was and if I wanted to play on his local basketball team that winter. Apparently there are not a lot of 6'10" snowboarders to recruit. He asked how he could get a hold of me, and I gave him a business card. Later on, somewhere between tequila shots, he looked at the card and asked, "You’re in the coffee business?" I said, "Yes,"… Mammoth Mountain is California’s premier ski resort. It is ranked among the top resorts in North America and 80% of its skiers are from Southern California. When I woke up the next morning, two things were on my mind. The first thing was the splitting headache from too much fun with the locals the night before. The second had to do with the person I met and the potential opportunity to knock Starbucks off the mountain (literally). I actually used Starbucks' size to their disadvantage by suggesting to Ty Buel that his ski resort needed real micro-roasted quality that only a small, local California roaster could provide. Now in our 6th consecutive year as the official coffee of Mammoth Mountain, we have been consistently ranked among the best vendors and have retained the crown jewel of California ski resorts.
